About the role

The Ministry of Defence is recruiting 13 nurses for its health services, supporting the health, safety and operational readiness of military personnel and patients. Ten posts are at the Queen Astrid Military Hospital (MHKA) in Neder-Over-Heembeek, and three are with the Directorate-General Health & Well-being (DG H&WB) in Neder-Over-Heembeek, Evere or Brasschaat. This is a permanent, full-time statutory post at level B, as a technical expert, open to external candidates. Depending on your affinities, you may work in burns and intensive care, in consultations and operational medical support, in a travel clinic and infectious diseases service, or as an occupational nurse, with further possibilities in the polyclinic, biophysiology or laboratory services. A typical day is multidisciplinary: monitoring patients, carrying out specialised nursing procedures, supporting doctors, keeping accurate electronic records, giving health and travel advice, and helping keep services running safely. Shift, weekend, night and on-call work may be required in some roles. Working hours follow a 38-hour week with sliding hours. Applications close on 9 November 2026.

Responsibilities

- Burns and intensive care: provide highly specialised care to critically ill patients, monitor and interpret vital parameters, operate advanced equipment such as ventilators and monitoring systems, manage central lines and other complex procedures, support doctors during urgent interventions, keep accurate electronic patient records, and give psychosocial support to patients and relatives, with strict hygiene, safety and isolation procedures - Consultations and operational medical support: carry out specialised procedures such as wound care, vaccinations and blood sampling, monitor vital parameters and interpret lung function, ECG and VO2 max results, give health and travel advice, manage medical records and stock, support doctors during consultations, and carry out laboratory tasks such as sample preparation and quality control - Travel clinic and infectious diseases: give travel advice to departing military personnel and families, carry out vaccinations, tuberculin tests and blood sampling, act as a central contact, manage stocks of medical products and vaccines, support travel medicine studies, and present on prevention measures for infectious diseases - Occupational nursing: assist the occupational physician with medical examinations, carry out medical examinations autonomously, administer vaccines and arrange follow-up contacts, take medical questionnaires, keep accurate electronic health records, manage vaccine stocks, and answer questions from client units

Requirements

A Bachelor's degree in nursing and at least 1 year of experience as a nurse, with an interest in both acute and preventive care and a willingness to work in a military context and to keep training continuously. A good knowledge of French is a plus. Important conditions as stated: you must be willing to work in a military environment and to undergo a security verification (under the law of 11 December 1998); staff must observe the neutrality principle and therefore wear no conspicuous signs of a religious, philosophical, political or trade-union conviction, because the function involves direct and visible contact with the public; and working at the Ministry of Defence means you accept that at any time during your career you may be assigned to other functions. Salary depends on recognised particularly useful professional experience: scale B1 from €37,699.39, scale B2 from €44,409.50, or scale B3 from €52,330.64 gross per year. Selection is in Dutch, by diploma and experience screening, a computer test at FPS BOSA in Brussels, and an interview with a case study. Candidates cannot apply by email; apply through the official Travaillerpour.be portal before the deadline.
