About the role

The Department of Economics and Management at the University of Padua, one of Italy's public universities, invites applications for a fixed-term postdoctoral position funded by the ERC Consolidator Grant RESTATE - Rethinking the Welfare State under Political Constraints in a Changing World (Grant Agreement No. 101232064), led by Professor Alessia Russo. RESTATE examines how welfare states can be designed and remain sustainable when political constraints limit government commitment and populations age, combining dynamic theory, quantitative heterogeneous-agent models and computational methods to study public debt, social insurance, intergenerational redistribution and growth-enhancing policies. The appointment runs for up to four years, is full-time and research-only with no teaching obligations, and includes substantial research support such as funding for data acquisition or creation. The preferred start date is September 2027, with flexibility for an earlier or later start. The department is based in Padua's historic centre and offers an active international research environment with regular seminars, workshops and a PhD programme in Economics and Management. Applications must be submitted via EconJobMarket by 30 November 2026 and include a cover letter, CV, job market paper, research proposal and two letters of recommendation; shortlisted candidates will be interviewed virtually in December 2026. The working language is English and knowledge of Italian is not required.
