About the role
ETH Zurich, one of the world's leading science and technology universities and part of Switzerland's public federal institute system, is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher to explore how quantum computing can simulate turbulent flows beyond the reach of today's classical computers. Based in Zurich at 100% on a fixed-term appointment, initially for one year with the possibility of extension to a second year, you will join the Computational Kinetics Group at D-MAVT and lead research on quantum approaches to fluid dynamics in collaboration with IBM. The work centres on the Lattice Boltzmann Method and its implementation on future quantum hardware for industrially relevant flows, comparing it with Navier-Stokes formulations, studying linearisation methods such as Kolmogorov, Koopman and Carleman approaches, sparse Hamiltonian methods, block encoding and quantum linear systems algorithms, and quantifying the potential for quantum advantage at high Reynolds numbers. You will present results to the ETH and IBM teams roughly every two weeks, publish in high-quality journals and present at international conferences. No salary is stated in the official listing. Applications are accepted exclusively through the ETH Zurich online application portal; applications by email or post will not be considered.
Requirements
- PhD in computational fluid dynamics, applied mathematics, physics, computer science, quantum computing, or a closely related field - Strong expertise in computational fluid dynamics, quantum physics, quantum algorithms, or quantum computing - Experience developing and analysing numerical or computational methods for scientific applications - Ability to work independently on technically challenging research questions and formulate new approaches - Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and clear communication of scientific results in written and spoken English - Experience with high-performance computing, scientific programming and/or quantum-computing frameworks is highly relevant
