Senior Data Engineer

About the role

The New Zealand Transport Agency is looking for a Senior Data Engineer to join its Wellington team and help turn large, complex transport information into trusted, usable data. In this senior role you will design and build reliable data pipelines, bring together information from different systems, and create well-structured datasets that support planning, reporting and better decisions across the transport network. A typical day may include working with analysts and engineers, checking data quality, improving existing pipelines, documenting how data is defined and used, and solving problems when sources change or volumes grow. You will also help set good engineering standards, review work with colleagues, and support a culture where data is accurate, secure and easy to understand. This is a Wellington-based role for someone who enjoys both technical depth and collaboration, and who wants their work to contribute to safer, more efficient and more connected travel for people and communities across New Zealand.

Responsibilities

- Design, build and maintain reliable data pipelines and data models - Integrate data from multiple operational and reporting systems - Monitor, test and improve data quality, performance and reliability - Document data definitions, sources and pipeline processes - Work with analysts, engineers and business teams to meet data needs - Support good data governance, security and engineering standards

Requirements

Senior experience in data engineering, including building and maintaining data pipelines, strong SQL and programming skills, experience with cloud data platforms and modern data tools, and a careful approach to data quality, documentation and working with stakeholders.
